At the Global Association of Certified Pastoral Counselors (GACPC), our beliefs are firmly rooted in the authority of God’s Word and the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. These convictions shape our counseling approach, guide our ethical standards, and inspire our global mission.
1. The Authority of Scripture
We believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God. It provides the foundation for truth, healing, and guidance in every area of life, including emotional and mental well-being.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
2. The Centrality of Christ
We believe that true healing comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the source of our peace, and the ultimate example of compassion and truth.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
3. The Role of the Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit empowers, comforts, and guides both the counselor and the counselee. Through the Spirit, we discern truth, extend grace, and offer hope that transforms lives.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” — John 14:26 (NIV)
4. The Value of Every Person
We believe every human being is created in the image of God and is worthy of dignity, compassion, and care. We affirm the intrinsic worth of individuals, regardless of their background or current struggles.
“So God created mankind in his own image… male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
5. The Importance of Ethical Practice
We are committed to counseling practices that are ethical, professional, and accountable. We train our members to respect confidentiality, uphold integrity, and serve with excellence.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” — Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
6. The Mission of the Church
We believe that Christian counseling is a vital part of the Church’s mission to make disciples, heal the brokenhearted, and set captives free. Our role is to support the Church in caring for the whole person—spirit, soul, and body.
“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted… to comfort all who mourn.” — Isaiah 61:1–2 (NIV)
